 A pre-hung door is a complete, self-contained unit already hanging in its own frame. Pre-hung doors come complete with a door slab, hinges and frame already configured for smooth operation. Pre-hung doors do cost more because of the extra materials being purchased and the cost of the labour to hang the door.
A pre-hung door is the perfect choice for installing a door into an area where there isn't already an existing door frame or where the existing door frame is so damaged or warped that hanging a slab door properly would be next to impossible. Exterior pre-hung doors are sold "weathertight" right off the shelf, eliminating the difficult task of making an exterior door tight-fitting.
When working on new construction or extensive remodeling it is often much easier to purchase and install a pre-hung door because the exacting task of hanging the door slab in the frame has already been done. Of course there is still the exacting task of fitting the pre-hung unit into the wall, a job which requires shimming and some skilled labour. After the pre-hung door unit is installed there is still lots of work to be done around the unit before the job can be considered complete (ie. Drywall, painting, molding, siding). The added bulk and weight of a pre-hung door makes them much more difficult to handle then a simple door slab.
