A French door, sometimes referred to as a French window, is a door made from panes or panels of glass. The glass is typically rectangular in shape and makes up the majority of the door surface. Wooden frames are usually used to separate the panes. Traditionally, French doors were assembled using several small pieces of glass and mullions in a technique known as True Divided Lites (TDL's). Today, French doors can be made in many different ways. The traditional TDL approach can be used or a single pane of glass can be used with mullions affixed to the outside to simulate the appearance of multiples panes (Simulated divided lites or SDL's). French doors made of double-pane glass can also feature decorative grille bars embedded between the panes of glass.
French doors are an excellent way to bring more natural light into a home or divide rooms while maintaining an open feel to the overall space. While a French door can be functional it is typically used more for the dramatic aesthetic effect it creates. A good use of a French door is to connect indoor and outdoor living spaces, such as a kitchen that opens onto a patio area or a master bedroom with a pair of French doors opening onto a balcony.
While the beauty of a French door is a large reason for their popularity, their versatility also makes them a prime choice for homeowners. French doors are often used as a repeating theme throughout a home to create an open feel. They can be used as individual or double door sets. Double sets of French doors can both be functional or one door may be fixed into a stationary position and locked into place with a bolt or a post.
A French door is also a great way to add value to your home. The attractiveness of a French door addition in your home can turn an ordinary room into something extraordinary that everyone will take a second look at.
